    Exploring Organizations\u27 Software Quality Assurance Strategies

    Poor software quality leads to lost profits and even loss of life. U.S. organizations lose billions of dollars annually because of poor software quality. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the strategies that quality assurance (QA) leaders in small software development organizations used for successful software quality assurance (SQA) processes. A case study provided the best research design to allow for the exploration of organizational and managerial processes. The target population group was the QA leaders of 3 small software development organizations who successfully implemented SQA processes, located in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. The conceptual framework that grounded this study was total quality management (TQM) established by Deming in 1980. Face-to-face semistructured interviews with 2 QA leaders from each organization and documentation including process and training materials provided all the data for analysis. NVivo software aided a qualitative analysis of all collected data using a process of disassembling the data into common codes, reassembling the data into themes, interpreting the meaning, and concluding the data. The resulting major themes were Agile practices, documentation, testing, and lost profits. The results were in contrast to the main themes discovered in the literature review, although there was some overlap. The implications for positive social change include the potential to provide QA leaders with the strategies to improve SQA processes, thereby allowing for improved profits, contributing to the organizations\u27 longevity in business, and strengthening the local economy

    The Army Air Corps Under Franklin D. Roosevelt: The Influence of Air Power on the Roosevelt Administration, 1933-1941.

    When Franklin D. Roosevelt entered the White House in 1933, the leaders of the Army Air Corps wanted to create an independent air force. Using Billy Mitchell\u27s tactics of public confrontation, exploitation of the Air Corps\u27 poor condition and unproven claims about air power, these officers only antagonized the people who could grant them independence. After 1934, Oscar Westover, H. H. Hap Arnold, Frank Andrews, and a number of other Air Corps officers started a concerted effort to promote themselves as team players who had given up Mitchell\u27s methods. With demonstrations, like long range flights to South America, they proved the efficiency of the Air Corps. By 1941, these officers has convinced Roosevelt, Congress and the General Staff that they could fulfill their claims. This trust was demonstrated in Roosevelt\u27s Air Corp expansion program and the Army\u27s war plans. After the war in Europe substantiated the ability of land-based airplanes to force unprotected naval forces to withdraw, Roosevelt and his military advisors placed increasing emphasis on the role of the Air Corps. While preparing to invade Europe, American bombers would destroy Nazi Germany\u27s ability to resist. In the Pacific, the United States would fight a defensive war until Germany was defeated. For two decades, the Army believed that the Philippines could not withstand a Japanese invasion and made little effort to fortify the Islands. The Luftwaffe\u27s defeat of the Royal Navy at Norway and Crete caused a reassessment. Placing its faith in advanced technology to compensate for Japan\u27s military preponderance in the Far East, the Army reinforced the Philippines with long range bombers. Confident the the Army Air Force could defend the Philippines, American civilian and military leaders expected the Philippine based bombers to cut off Japan\u27s sea communications. Also, they planned to take advantage of the long standing Japanese fear of air attacks burning their wooden cities. Threatened with the destruction of their cities, the Japanese would have been forced to accept American demands. However, it was not an idle threat

    Primary zone modeling for gas turbine combustors

    Thesis (Sc.D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Aeronautics and Astronautics, 1999."June 1999."Includes bibliographical references (p. 107-110).Gas turbine combustor primary zone flows are typified by swirling flow with heat release in a variable area duct, where a central toroidal recirculation zone is formed. The goal of the research was to develop reduced-order models for these flows in an attempt to gain insight into, and understanding of the behavior of swirling flows with combustion. The specific research objectives were (i) to develop a quantitative understanding and ability to compute the behavior of swirling flows with heat addition at conditions typical of gas turbine combustors, (ii) to assess the relative merits of various reduced-order models, and (iii) to define the applicability of these models in the design process. To this end, several reduced-order models of combustor primary zones were developed and assessed. The models represent different levels of modeling approximations and complexity. The models include a quasi-one-dimensional control volume analysis, a streamline curvature model, a quasi-one- dimensional model with recirculation zone capturing (CFLOW), and an axisymmetric Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes code (UTNS). The models were evaluated through inter-comparison, and comparison with experiment. Following this evaluation, CFLOW was applied to a lean-premixed combustor for which three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solutions existed. These simplified analyses/models were able to capture the features of swirling flows with heat release across flow regimes of interest in gas turbine combustors, provide insight into the underlying physics, and yield guidelines for design purposes. Cross-comparison of the reduced-order models highlighted the aspects of these flows that need to be described accurately. Specifically, modeling of the mixing on the downstream boundary of a recirculation zone is crucial for accurate computation of these flows, with both Reynolds stresses and bulk transport across the interface being accounted for in order to capture recirculation zone closure. The simplified mixing and heat release models used had limitations arising from the need to input empirically-derived parameters. Calibration of these parameters with higher-fidelity computations and experiments allowed comparison of the models across the flow regimes of interest. Following calibration of the mixing and heat release models, CFLOW was able to compute recirculation zone volumes to within 25% of those given by both the axisymmetric and three-dimensional Navier-Stokes codes for swirl ratios between 0.5 and 1.0 and equivalence ratios between 0.0 and 0.8.by David Scott Underwood.Sc.D

    Increasingly, criminal justice practitioners have been called on to help solve breaches in cyber security. However, while the demand for criminal justice participation in cyber investigations increases daily, most universities are lagging in their educational and training opportunities for students entering the criminal justice fields. This article discusses the need to incorporate courses discussing the Dark Web in criminal justice. A review of existing cyber-criminal justice programs in Texas and nationally suggests that most community colleges and 4-year universities have yet to develop courses/programs in understanding and investigating the Dark Web on the internet. The Dark Web serves as the new ā€œCriminal Undergroundā€ for illegal activity and needs to be understood. This research outlines the need for criminal justice programs to teach courses in the Dark Web and offer course recommendations. Recommended syllabi material for Dark Web courses in criminal justice, and recommendations for development of these programs are included

    Leaving Elementary School with a Sense of Order in Nature

    Ninth graders in Arizona high schools have just left their elementary, general science education and are at the start of more specialized secondary science education. They are beginning a course of study that will form the foundation for tertiary education and employment after high school graduation. The research asked, Who are these kids entering high school science courses? The researchers noted that one of the key objectives of elementary education is to foster in children the concept that nature is inherently orderly and thus amenable to scientific investigation. Since the concept of order or disorder is fundamental in oneā€™s perception of reality, the researchers reasoned that the qualitative worldview interviews on nature would be revealing of these concepts. The research led to this assertion: After nine years of schooling, ninth graders show no consistent understanding of the order in nature on which science is predicated. Instead, students often name drop school science topics such as the ozone layer, rain forests, or the big bang theory

    The Different Worlds of High School Biology and Physical Science Teachers

    A science teacher not only presents scientific concepts, but tacitly creates a context in which scientific concepts are presented to the class. This context can be strongly influenced by teacher beliefs or worldview. In the current research, teacher worldviews with respect to the essence of nature were examined. Two biology and two physical science teachers individually sat for qualitative interviews. The same interview protocols were used in a concurrent study involving ninth graders at their high school. The analysis led to three assertions: (1) When compared with their students, the science teachers had a much more focused and less diverse conceptualization of the natural world. The students were much more likely to speak of aesthetic and spiritual elements of nature in contrast to their teachers who focused more on what one could know about nature. Teachers also spoke more in-depth on topics rather than the ā€œname droppingā€ typical of the students. (2) The most interesting finding was that the physical science and biology teachers had considerably different conceptualizations of nature. The physical science teachers talked much more about all that scientists do know about nature and how successful science has been. (3) The biology teachers were much less sanguine about science, yet clearly enthusiastic. They showed greater concern about the environment and were more likely to speak of the aesthetics of nature

It is demonstrated here both theoretically and experimentally that the layout of the n-contact in these devices is important for the best device performance. We highlight, in particular, the significance of a nonthermal increase of differential resistance upon multipixel operation. These findings underpin the realization of a blue microdisplay with a luminance of 10ā¶ cd/mĀ²
